Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup melted unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2–3 medium apples
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- ¼ cup softened butter
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk (or non-dairy alternative)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine 1 cup of warm milk (around 110°F) with 2 ¼ teaspoons of active dry yeast and 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 4 cups of all-purpose flour, ½ cup of granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt.
- Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it to the dry ingredients along with 1/3 cup of melted unsalted butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Stir until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- While the dough rises, peel and dice 2-3 medium apples. In a bowl, mix the apples with ½ cup of brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Set aside.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle, about 16×24 inches.
- Spread ¼ cup of softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the apple filling evenly across the surface.
- Starting from one long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seams to seal and cut the log into 12 equal pieces.
- Place the rolls into a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the rolls are baking, whisk together 1 cup of powdered sugar and 2-3 tablespoons of milk (or non-dairy alternative) until smooth. Drizzle over the warm rolls once they’re out of the oven.

Keywords: Don’t rush the rising time; the dough needs time to develop flavor and texture. Experiment with spices and try different apples for a more complex flavor profile.
