Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large loaf of sourdough bread
- 1 pound of spaghetti
- 4 tablespoons of olive oil
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup of fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 cup of marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cut off the top of the sourdough bread to create a lid and set it aside.
- Hollow out the inside of the loaf, being careful not to break through the bottom or sides. Set the bread insides aside for later use.
- Brush the inside of the hollowed-out bread with 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
- Place the bread bowls on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes, until golden.
- Boil a large pot of salted water and cook the spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente (about 8-10 minutes).
- Reserve 1 cup of pasta water, then drain the spaghetti and set aside in a large mixing bowl.
- In a small saucepan, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat.
- Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using) and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Pour the garlic oil over the cooked spaghetti and toss to coat.
- Add salt, black pepper, grated Parmesan cheese, and chopped parsley to the spaghetti. Toss until well combined, adding reserved pasta water as needed for desired consistency.
- Fill the toasted bread bowls with the garlic spaghetti mixture.
- Spoon marinara sauce over the filled spaghetti in each bread bowl.
- Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese generously over the marinara sauce.
- Return the filled bread bowls to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- For an extra crispy top, broil for the last 2-3 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
- Let the garlic bread bowls cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Serve warm, garnished with additional parsley and Parmesan cheese if desired.
- To eat, break off pieces of the bread bowl and scoop up the spaghetti and sauce.
Notes
- Feel free to customize the toppings with your favorite ingredients, such as sautéed vegetables or different cheeses.
- The bread insides can be used to make croutons or breadcrumbs for future recipes.
