Description
This Easy Chicken Tater Tot Casserole is a comforting dish that combines tender chicken, creamy sauce, and crispy tater tots into one delightful meal. It’s perfect for busy weeknights or family gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded or diced (about 2 medium chicken breasts)
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
- 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn, etc.)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (plus extra for topping, if desired)
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 bag (32 oz) frozen tater tots
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional, for greasing the baking dish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). This ensures your casserole bakes evenly and comes out perfectly golden.
- In a large bowl, combine the cooked chicken, cream of chicken soup, frozen mixed vegetables, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt and pepper. Mix until well combined. The mixture should be creamy and slightly thick, without any lumps from the soup.
- Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with olive oil to prevent sticking. Use a paper towel to spread the oil for an even coat.
- Pour the chicken mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly across the bottom. Make sure to reach the edges to create a uniform casserole.
- Evenly distribute the frozen tater tots on top of the chicken mixture, arranging them in a single layer. Try not to overlap them too much for the best crispy texture.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes. Keep an eye on it; the tater tots should turn golden brown and crispy while the filling bubbles around the edges.
- If you want a cheesier topping, sprinkle additional shredded cheddar cheese on top during the last 5 minutes of baking. It should melt into a gooey layer.
- Once done, remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly, making it easier to serve.

Keywords: To avoid a soggy bottom, ensure your chicken and vegetable mixture isn’t overly wet. Drain excess liquid if necessary before adding to the casserole. Use a glass baking dish for even heat distribution and to easily monitor browning.
