  • Author: Lily
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 12 fritters 1x

Description

Enjoy these homemade apple fritters, featuring tender Granny Smith apples in a sweet, spiced batter. Fried to golden perfection and dusted with powdered sugar, they make a delightful treat for breakfast, snacks, or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large apples (preferably Granny Smith)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole milk recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Oil for frying (vegetable oil recommended)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Optional: caramel sauce for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Wash the apples thoroughly. Peel if desired, or leave the skin on for texture.
  2. Core and chop the apples into small, bite-sized pieces (about 1/2-inch cubes).
  3. Toss the chopped apples with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a tablespoon of sugar in a small bowl.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg.
  5. In another bowl, beat the egg, then add the milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Whisk until smooth.
  6. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently fold together with a spatula, being careful not to overmix. A few lumps are okay.
  7. Fold in the prepared apple pieces until evenly distributed.
  8. In a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pot, heat enough oil to reach about 2 inches deep over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  9. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, frying about 3-4 fritters at a time to avoid overcrowding.
  10. Fry for 2-3 minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip and fry for another 2-3 minutes.
  11. Remove fritters from the oil and place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  12. Dust the warm fritters generously with powdered sugar.
  13. Drizzle with caramel sauce if desired.
  14. Serve warm. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to two days and reheat in the oven for crispiness.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature to avoid greasy fritters.
  • Feel free to experiment with different apple varieties for varied sweetness.
  • Add chopped nuts or raisins for extra flavor, or spices like cardamom or ginger for a twist.
